Mosquito Multiplier

How a Population Booms

Everyone knows the high-pitched whine that can only mean one thing:  mosquitoes are near. Here in the desert, people are often surprised at just how easily mosquitoes can breed and become a nuisance. To highlight how fast mosquitoes multiply, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) released “Mosquito Multiplier” – an astonishing video project created by researchers studying mosquito breeding with amazing results.

According to Jim Fredricks, Ph.D., chief entomologist for the NPMA, the video project recreated ideal mosquito breeding conditions that can be found in any backyard, hatched mosquito eggs, and recorded the results. The simulation’s mosquito population exploded with more than 5,000 mosquitoes hatched in less than one week. “Mosquito Multiplier” is a vital resource in helping homeowners understand how to prevent mosquito population explosions on their property.

Dangerous Breeding Power

Mosquitos are found all over the country and flourish in warm, moist conditions. Even here in the harsh desert, as little as half an inch of water is all the opportunity mosquitoes need to breed with abandon. Once hatched, mosquitoes can be more than a nuisance – they can spread West Nile virus, malaria, Zika virus, Dengue virus, and other diseases. The mosquito is considered the deadliest animal in the world. Eliminating easy breeding conditions is essential in preventing infestations. Homeowners are encouraged to inspect their yards weekly and get rid of standing water in toys, gardening equipment, buckets, kiddie pools, bird baths, and wheelbarrows.
